MUNKS ON FRICTION SHOW ON BBC ASIAN NETWORK
Sunday, May 11th, 2008CERTAIN EXPERIENCES ARE DIFFICULT TO SUM UP IN WORDS. THIS WAS ONE OF THEM !!!!

So after I sent a random email to Bobby Friction saying “Hi there… my name is DJ Munks.. I speacialise in doing an East meets West mix of Bollywood with House n Bhangra n RnB n Electronica n DnB n loads of others.. & here are a few of my mix sessions.. It would be great if you could listen in to them & tell me what you think.. “ {Well you can listen to what I sent to Bobby Friction right here.. }
Well a week down the line, I get a call from an witheld number.. A very sweet voice on the other side says.. “Hi there.. I am Helen the producer of the Friction Show on BBC Radio 1.. I was wondering if you wanted to do a Live Set on the Friction show at prime time on a Friday Midnight.. ”
Guess what my reply was.. SILENCE !!!! Cause my jaw was on the floor dummy… lol.. I still cant believe what I heard on that call.. BOBBY “SUPER” FRICTION loved my set and wanted me to do a House Vs Bollywood rendition set live on his show which is heard through 4 continents and has a following like none other.. Helen booked me in for Friday the 28th March to do a 40 minute set.. & I picked up my bags, my CD cases, my headphones & got on my way to Birmingham.. woohooo !!!
I spent the whole day walking around the town… trying to site see… but a nervous wreck thinking about my evening performance.. Then I crossed St. Paul’s Church & like a film scene the sky lit up & God said.. “Here is some inspiration for you & a lil surprise.” There I go and bump up into NICK MASON from Pink Floyd.. You can read about my experience with him here..
Well i used all the inspiration derived to hit it off on the Friction show.. I got to the studio to find the great Friction behind the mic shouting out my name later on in the show.. Playing out his carefully selected bled of music as always.. He looked so comfortable in his seat & danced around as he spoke while my tummy roared if I will be able to confront and impress this man with my talent.. He probably noticed my discomfort and came out to say HI & put my mind right at rest.. They took me in to the studio for 11:50 while we chat around to get to know each other.. He is such a master in handling inspiring artists like me that he made me feel so confident.. Well then when we went of the show.. it was like talking normally with no big hangup’s.. We were just having a chat discussing how the British Asian music scene is sooo different from the Bollywood scene & what are the typical problems faced by me as a DJ when it comes to keeping the British Asian and Asian abroad audiences together on the same floor..
Dedicating my set to that topic I started my set with the dialogue.. “Indian girls are now liking Bhangra… Good to know”. lol.. Listen to the recording of the set I played in my blog above.. Bobby Friction commented after my set by saying.. “I have never heard Bollywood music played like that before”. The page in’s, email’s & messages received on the show had a few people saying… “We now know cheesy Bollywood music can sound good as well”. “A Wicked set by DJ Munks”. “Very upbeat and well laid set”.
All in all.. like I said.. cant sum up the experience in words.. BIG UP BOBBY FRICTION & his team.. Thanks a million for the opportunity. I loved every minute spent in the studio with you all. Was an absolute honor !!
