MUNKS ON FRICTION SHOW ON BBC ASIAN NETWORK

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

CERTAIN EXPERIENCES ARE DIFFICULT TO SUM UP IN WORDS. THIS WAS ONE OF THEM !!!!

So after I sent a random email to Bobby Friction saying “Hi there… my name is DJ Munks.. I speacialise in doing an East meets West mix of Bollywood with House n Bhangra n RnB n Electronica n DnB n loads of others.. & here are a few of my mix sessions.. It would be great if you could listen in to them & tell me what you think.. “  {Well you can listen to what I sent to Bobby Friction right here.. }

Well a week down the line, I get a call from an witheld number.. A very sweet voice on the other side says.. “Hi there.. I am Helen the producer of the Friction Show on BBC Radio 1.. I was wondering if you wanted to do a Live Set on the Friction show at prime time on a Friday Midnight.. ”

Guess what my reply was.. SILENCE !!!! Cause my jaw was on the floor dummy… lol.. I still cant believe what I heard on that call.. BOBBY “SUPER” FRICTION loved my set and wanted me to do a House Vs Bollywood rendition set live on his show which is heard through 4 continents and has a following like none other.. Helen booked me in for Friday the 28th March to do a 40 minute set.. & I picked up my bags, my CD cases, my headphones & got on my way to Birmingham.. woohooo !!!

I spent the whole day walking around the town… trying to site see… but a nervous wreck thinking about my evening performance.. Then I crossed St. Paul’s Church & like a film scene the sky lit up & God said.. “Here is some inspiration for you & a lil surprise.” There I go and bump up into NICK MASON from Pink Floyd.. You can read about my experience with him here..

Well i used all the inspiration derived to hit it off on the Friction show.. I got to the studio to find the great Friction behind the mic shouting out my name later on in the show.. Playing out his carefully selected bled of music as always.. He looked so comfortable in his seat & danced around as he spoke while my tummy roared if I will be able to confront and impress this man with my talent.. He probably noticed my discomfort and came out to say HI & put my mind right at rest.. They took me in to the studio for 11:50 while we chat around to get to know each other.. He is such a master in handling inspiring artists like me that he made me feel so confident.. Well then when we went of the show.. it was like talking normally with no big hangup’s.. We were just having a chat discussing how the British Asian music scene is sooo different from the Bollywood scene & what are the typical problems faced by me as a DJ when it comes to keeping the British Asian and Asian abroad audiences together on the same floor..

Dedicating my set to that topic I started my set with the dialogue.. “Indian girls are now liking Bhangra… Good to know”. lol.. Listen to the recording of the set I played in my blog above.. Bobby Friction commented after my set by saying.. “I have never heard Bollywood music played like that before”. The page in’s, email’s & messages received on the show had a few people saying… “We now know cheesy Bollywood music can sound good as well”. “A Wicked set by DJ Munks”. “Very upbeat and well laid set”.

All in all.. like I said.. cant sum up the experience in words.. BIG UP BOBBY FRICTION & his team.. Thanks a million for the opportunity. I loved every minute spent in the studio with you all. Was an absolute honor !!

Trip to Birmingham & meeting NICK MASON-PINK FLOYD..whooooaaaa!!!

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

So I went to Birmingham to do a live set on the BOBBY FRICTION show on the BBC Asian Network.. what a brilliant day it was!!

Just the excitement on meeting and performing on Bobby Frictions show kept me wide awake the night before but still loaded with energy for the next day to go around the exciting town of Birmingham. Loved every minute walking around on the streets there and clicking pictures of the fab Bullring, the town centre, lovely churches and the classic canal system.

I started from my hotel room & went along the back to back hoses in the chinese area to the Bullring. If I had the money and the mood to shop.. I would have stayed there forever. But sadly I just spent 2 mins inside the building. Walked through the town market and straight to the Town Centre. This is the best place to be in the city. You like the busy bustling of the town.. stay at the Bullring.. & if you like the quiet and classic wide buildings.. sit down at the Town Centre.. you wouldn’t wanna go anywhere else.

I then walked to the other side of the town to get to the canal’s.. and aaahhh.. what a view.. what a lovely calm walk. Although I was a little tired by now, but walking around the calm waters took it all away. I walked around the canal’s to the other side of town for my biggest surprise!!

I got of the canal’s to go to the St. Paul’s Cathedral. Lovely church.. but then I saw this poster for
St. Paul’s Gallery which only hosts music Album covers. Loved the idea and walked into check it out. A super good collection of Floyd, Zeplin and many other rock band’s limited edition, signed, poster size album covers.. and all of them for sale normally above £500… some even around £2000. I couldn’t help but complement the owner who seemed quiet busy polishing things around. We got talking and I told him I was here to perform on BBC radio & do lot of music back in Wales. He told me about him and also that today a couple of hours later was their lauch night for the gallery. Seeing my interest, he was kind enough to invite me to the limited guestlist of 100 people and I had to say Yes.

I took a walk around the Jewellery Quarter and came back to the gallery to have my jaw drop and eyes pop out.. I was standing in front of the legendry NICK MASON - the drummer and founder member of PINK FLOYD. The gallery owner came up to me & said “Surprise”.. Whhhhaaaaaaattttttt A Surpriseeeee !!!!
I couldn’t believe my luck.. the idol, a legend, Nick Mason right before me and I got to talk to him as well. He is sooo polite and humble. He even gave me an autograph which I will treasure for life. Check out the photos below and the video along to see the man in real.. reel.. lol

P.S. – Dont try to sneak into my room to steal his autographed CD…. I have it locked up in a locker..  :-D

MUNKS with IMRAN KHAN IN CARDIFF..

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Performing with the man behind the superhit “NI NACHLEY” was a quiet a deal.. Another rocking Vibrasians.com event at the exclusive Tiger Tiger club in Cardiff. DJ Harry Singh from Cardiff radio opened the event with some classic Bhangra tunes while the club filled up to its capacity.. Right then it was time for me to take over & get the party started. Building it up from where Harry left it with some hard-hitting Bhangra numbers to get everyone up to the point when no one even wanted to go to the bar to get a drink dint take lot of my effort.. Pumping it up with some classic Bollywood hits in my true style with a mix of RnB got everyone swinging… By then, the headliner of the night had arrived..

Dressed in black with girls queing up around the VIP area to get a pic with the man from Amsterdam.. IMRAN KHAN.. the latest sensation on the Bhangra scene came up to the Booth to pic up the mic and made an entry to the squeaking female sound with an Acoustic Ni Nachley version.. Simply killed it.. I then hit play to the classic tune with everyone jumping around while he sings it out LIVE and exclusive.. He then performed around number from his upcoming album followed by a dance version of Ni Nachley.. He then had to call it off as the performance area was sprawling with women to give him a hug… even the security were helpless.. lol.. But after his awsome performance.. there was not much left for me to do.. Just kept giving out the hits till the club had had enough and needed to shut down with the crowd still refusing to go.. All in all.. you missed a big one if you wern’t there.. !!!

Check out my next big gig in Leicester where I can assure you.. there will be more fainting girls than shouting girls with the massive Jay Sean performing there.. 30th May’ 08.. Leicester Asian Ball.. Get your tickets before they sell out.. !!! Others performing will be Lehmber Hussainpuri, Lisa Mafia, Ricky Bhalla & me ofcourse.. ;-)

BASSLINE PUDDING WITH JAMIE DUGGAN & DJ RAHEEM

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

This was simply an awsome night when it comes to MUSIC !!!

Starting off with the popular RnB tunes by DJ Moe.. This dude has completely transformed n come miles as a DJ. Trained by the super DJ Raheem from KISS FM himself.. DJ Moe has the ear n the skills to mix it right when it comes to RnB & Hip-Hop.

But who does it better than Mr. Raheem himself.. Raheem took on the decks at Monchinos next for a solid hour.. Cant think of a popular tune he missed in his set.. n mixed it all soo well in the typical Raheem style..
absolutely phenomenal !!!

DJ Troopa took on from the RnB bed n went on with some solid Drum n Bass with a tight Bassline touch.. a really good set by this Cardiff boy..

JAMIE DUGGAN came along.. went on.. n i could’nt understand where an hour went.. There is a very thin line between Drum’n'Bass & Bassline.. & this man knows that boundry.. When you listen to every track he plays you automatically say .. “hey.. that is not DnB.. although it’s quiet close.. what is it ??” Well that’s just the sound of Jamie killing it with his Bassline blend.. Am not going to miss any possible opportunity to watch this guy up on the decks.. I also had a good chat with him on a number of topics ranging from the best headphones to the difference between DnB & Bassline on the production level.. This dude knows his stuff and a definite recommend..

The last hour went on with a good mix of Bassline with RnB, Hip-hop and popular music with our very own DJ Nezzy..
Another wicked night at Monchinos in Cardiff.. Big up the organisers.. !!
